Working Groups

The following working groups were established at the open meeting on 28th June 2009. All groups have adopted the core purpose of Walden in Transition which is:

“Our core purpose is to take, and inspire others to take, collaborative actions that strengthen our local communities by building resilience, and to respond positively to the challenges of climate change, declining energy supplies and a faltering economy.”

Anyone is welcome to join one of more working groups at any time, but please get in touch with the group convener if you are new and would like to attend their next meeting.

Energy

WiT Energy Group aims to increase local energy self sufficiency and carbon dioxide reduction. It has entered into a Low Carbon Affiliation Scheme (LoCAS) with Green Energy UK (which gives WiT supporters a 10% discount on 100% Renewable Electricity) and is considering other projects to meet these aims. See Notes from Meetings for more information about the activities of this group.

Walden Pound

This group is investigating the viability of a local currency for use in connection with local traders, as distinct from skills sharing as set out above. The purpose of a local currency is to keep money circulating within the community rather than have it leak out. This group is currently assisting the Saffron Walden Business Forum in setting up a loyalty card scheme in the town. See notes from the group's meetings for more information.
